Short common rule of prayer during the coronavirus outbreak
- parish of St John the Evangelist Cambridge -
We aim for as many of us as possible to pray together, in our own homes, using this short rule of prayer, every day at 19:00.
May God receive our prayer!
(Those who cannot do so at 19:00, are welcome to pray when they can, but pray nonetheless.)
May God receive our prayer!
(Those who cannot do so at 19:00, are welcome to pray when they can, but pray nonetheless.)
Glory to You, our God, glory to You!
Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, present everywhere and filling all things, Treasury of blessings and Giver of Life: come and abide in us, cleanse us of every stain; and save our souls, O good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (x3)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us of our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Your name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (x3) Glory…, now and ever…
Our Father, Who art in the heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Lord have mercy (x12), then:
PSALM 22 (23) (A Psalm of David) - NRSV
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads at the waters of rest
3 He restores my soul. He leads me on the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff - they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord or length of days.
PSALM 66 (67) - NRSV
1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us.
2 That your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations.
3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth.
5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
6 The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us.
7 May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him.
PSALM 94 (95) - NRSV
1 O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
6 O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
O that today you would listen to his voice!
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
9 when your ancestors tested me, and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.
10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they do not regard my ways.”
11 Therefore in my anger I swore, “They shall not enter my rest.”
PSALMUL 24 (25) (A Psalm of David) - NRSV
1 In you, Lord my God, I put my trust.
2 I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.
3 No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.
4 Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.
5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.
6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good.
8 Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
9 He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.
10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
11 For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great.
12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose.
13 They will spend their days in prosperity, and their descendants will inherit the land.
14 The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.
15 My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish.
18 Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins.
19 See how numerous are my enemies and how fiercely they hate me!
20 Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you.
22 Deliver Israel, O God, from all their troubles!
Then this prayer:
O Lord our God, remember us, your sinful and unprofitable servants, when we call upon Your holy name, and turn us not away in shame from the expectation of Your mercy; but grant us, O Lord, all our requests which are for salvation. And grant us to love and fear You with our whole heart, and to do Your will in all things. For You are a good God and the Lover of mankind, and to You we send up glory, to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen
Special prayer for deliverance from new coronavirus epidemic
(from the Patriarchate of Romania)
Lord, our God, Who are rich in mercy, and with your wise providence govern our life, hear our prayer, receive our repentance for our sins, stop the new infectious disease (the new epidemic), as You once ceased the punishment of Your people in the time of King David. You, Who are the Physician of our souls and bodies, grant recovery to the sick, raising them hastily from the bed of suffering so that they may glorify You, our Merciful Saviour, and protect the healthy ones from any disease. Bless, O Lord, strengthen and protect with Your grace all those who with philanthropy and sacrifice take care of the sick at their homes or in hospitals.
Remove all disease and suffering from among the people and teach us to value life and health as Your gifts. Give us, o God, Your peace and fill our hearts with steadfast faith in Your protection, with hope in Your support and with love for You and our neighbour. For it is Yours to have mercy on us and save us, our God, and to You we give glory: to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
During great Lent we add also: The Prayer of Saint Ephrem the Syrian
O Lord and Master of my life, grant me not a spirit of sloth, meddling, love of power, and idle talk. (a prostration) // But give to me, your servant, a spirit of sober-mindedness, humility, patience, and love. (a prostration) // Yes, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and not to judge my brother, since you are blessed to the ages of ages. Amen. (a prostration) //
Then:
It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos, ever blessed, and most pure, and the Mother of our God: more honourable than the cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim. Without corruption you gave birth to God, the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify thee.
Glory…, now and ever… Lord, have mercy. (x3) For the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
